Carragher reveals the TWO players Liverpool need to dethrone Man City
Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool need two more high-profile signings before they can truly challenge Man City for the Premier League title again.
After a dire 2022/23 campaign, Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke set about rejigging Liverpool's midfield in the summer, signing four players in the form of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch - and it bore fruit.
The Reds have been much, much improved this term, yet some performances have still left a lot to be desired. Indeed, their most recent game - a 1-1 draw away to lowly Luton that required a symbolic 95th-minute equaliser from Luis Diaz - showed once again that Klopp's men are not quite back at the level of a few years ago.

Jamie Carragher expressed exactly this sentiment after the match and he is convinced that two more top-class signings are required before his former side can dethrone the dominant Man City.
Liverpool need another midfielder
The Reds legend thinks that a versatile defender and yet another midfielder are just what the doctor ordered. “Liverpool in midfield are a lot improved than we saw last season but they still haven’t got a top holding midfield player,” he told Sky Sports.
“MacAllister’s not a holding midfield player...so I still think they can improve there.” Unsurprisingly, Liverpool are expected to make a January move for Fluminense star Andre - a defensive midfielder - who just helped his side claim the Copa Libertadores.
“I think," Carragher continued, "in the back four Liverpool could do with not so much a player for a specific position but almost just a great defender who can play a couple of positions. They went with [Joe] Gomez today at left-back instead of [Kostas] Tsimikas, they thought he’d be stronger defensively."

“I still think Liverpool could do with another player in that position, probably on the other side at right-back and maybe release Trent [Alexander-Arnold] at different times maybe into midfield, against certain opposition you play someone there who’s maybe stronger and tougher defensively.”
In addition to Andre, the Reds have also been linked with Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie. Though a left-sided player, the Ecuador international can feature at centre-back and full-back and seems a realistic option given that he is struggling for game time this season.
“I think Liverpool are not ready to win the league," Carragher concluded. "I think Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters know that right now. They want to get back in the top four but in terms of challenging again I think they need another midfield player and a top-class defender.”
