Manchester United will have a serious transfer battle on their hands if they wish to sign Guido Rodriguez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Argentine World Cup winner has emerged as a target for the Red Devils as they look for a long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is increasingly looking unfit to compete at the highest level in the Premier League.

A proper ball-winner, Rodriguez has earned plenty of plaudits with his performances for Real Betis. Out of contract in the summer, the upcoming transfer windows - either January or in the summer - could be his final chance at signing for a really elite club given that he, too, is no spring chicken at 29.

Real Betis have struggled financially since the outbreak of COVID-19 and are facing a tough task in trying to extend his contract, though the Argentine would reportedly be open to remaining in Seville. In addition to Man Utd, Barcelona have also been heavily linked with Rodriguez.

The Blaugrana are still looking for a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets and a free transfer move for the Betis star is seen as one of the most sensible options for the cash-strapped Catalans. They are, however, not the only LaLiga side keen on Rodriguez.

What did Romano say?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid are also in the mix for the 29-year-old. “Real Betis want to offer Guido Rodriguez a new deal as he comes closer to being a free agent," the transfer expert told CaughtOffside.

"The same for [ex-Barcelona defender] Juan Miranda, but at this stage, there’s no agreement with both players including Guido. It’s an open situation. At the moment [there] is not something concrete, but there’s interest from many clubs including Atletico Madrid.”

Since moving to Betis in 2019/20, Rodriguez has enjoyed a significant rise in transfer value, though he has recently dropped off, currently standing at €13.7 million after a peak of €20.4m.
