Getafe are hoping to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood on a permanent deal once his loan move ends next summer.

Greenwood, 22, joined Getafe on a one-year deal during the most recent transfer window after Man Utd decided it was best for him to continue his career abroad.

The Red Devils had received backlash for their reported desire to keep hold of Greenwood, but eventually decided against re-integrating him into the team.

The Englishman had been suspended by Man Utd since January 2022, the day of his arrest for suspicion of rape and assault, before moving to Spain.

He denied all allegations and after key witnesses withdrew from the investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against the forward in February 2023.

After a lengthy investigation into the player, Man Utd reached a mutual agreement that Greenwood would leave the club on loan.

The Sun have now reported that Getafe want to sign the forward permanently, although they are aware that another loan move may be a more likely arrangement.

Getafe want Greenwood

An unnamed source told The Sun: “Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill.

“The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life.

“They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so - and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”

Greenwood has made 10 appearances in all competitions for Getafe, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

The Englishman is still contracted to Man Utd and his current deal at Old Trafford is due to expire in 2025. Therefore, he will either be sold next summer or the Red Devils will likely lose him on a free transfer the following year.
