Man Utd quoted €35m for Onana upgrade
Manchester United have been told that they will have to pay €35 million for Ivan Provedel, the Lazio who could replace Andre Onana.
Onana only arrived at Man Utd in the summer, when the club were forced to scramble for a replacement for David de Gea, who departed after talks over a new contract broke down.
After a slow start at Old Trafford, the Cameroon international has quietened critics thanks to a series of improved displays, with a vital penalty save at the end of a 1-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen seen as a turning point.
But while the criticism of Onana may have gone away, the doubts over the player do not appear to, with Il Messaggero reporting that Man Utd are lining up a January bid for Provedel.
Lazio will only sell the 29-year-old for a fee of over €35 million, it is reported.
Provedel is BETTER than Onana
There is no guarantee that Man Utd see Provodel as a replacement for Onana, though according to data analytics firm SciSports, he is presently a better goalkeeper than the incumbent at Old Trafford.
Equally, though, manager Erik ten Hag could see the Italian as healthy competition for the 27-year-old.
Altay Bayindir was drafted in for that role from Fenerbahce in August, yet the Turkey international goalkeeper has failed to play a single minute under Ten Hag, having been on the bench for every single game since he joined the club.
He would have hoped to have been tested in the League Cup as a minimum, yet the manager has favoured Onana in these encounters, suggesting that Bayindir is some distance behind Onana in the pecking order.
Worse, with Man Utd out of the League Cup, his most realistic chance of being able to make his mark will come in the FA Cup in January unless Onana picks up a suspension or an injury.
Clearly, the goalkeeping position is one that remains under review, with Provedel one player being monitored by the Red Devils.
