Newcastle won't have to fear PSG's biggest star in the Champions League because they have their very own Kylian Mbappe in Anthony Gordon.

Of course, the comparison between the Frenchman and the Englishman is an exaggeration, but that didn't stop a journalist from asking Magpies boss Eddie Howe whether Gordon was, in a way, Newcastle's Mbappe.

Howe didn't shirk the chance to heap praise on his winger after yet another outstanding performance at the weekend against Chelsea that saw him net a lovely goal as the Blues were put to the sword 4-1. “He’s been in great form for us," Howe said, as relayed by GFFN. "We knew we signed a player with huge potential, with passing and technical ability. When you look at his last game, he scored a brilliant goal."

“We’re encouraging him to keep adding valuable goal contributions. He is a unique player who has a high physical output every week, playing on the edge as a fierce competitor. His emergence has been quite quick this year, and I’m sure [England boss] Gareth [Southgate] will pick him in the future.”

Scouse Mbappe

Ultimately, the comparisons between the ex-Everton man and the PSG megastar end once you look beyond them both being left-wingers. Gordon's respectable output of five goals and three assists in 12 Premier League games is nothing compared to Mbappe's 14 goals and two assists in 12 Ligue 1 matches.

Yet, when Gordon gets going, there is an air of Mbappe about him simply in that he can be unstoppable on his day. His speed and technical ability make him a dangerous weapon and if, as Howe said, he produces goal contributions more consistently, there is no reason to believe he can't become a European star.

Ahead of Newcastle's trip to the Parc des Princes, Gordon was singled out as the biggest threat to PSG and Mbappe. It's a must-win game for the Magpies and if they can recapture the form they showed when they demolished the Ligue 1 side 4-1 earlier in the season, the headlines could once again be about Anthony Gordon, Newcastle's Scouse Mbappe.
