Newcastle are chasing a move for Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Lino, who is statistically the best wing-back in LaLiga so far this season.

Although Lino has not necessarily held down a starting spot under Diego Simeone this season, when he has taken to the field, the Brazilian has been impressive.

Todo Fichajes reports that there is “great interest” in the player, with Newcastle “closely monitoring” the player.

One of the revelations in LaLiga this season, Lino has primarily played as an attacking left wing-back for Atletico Madrid, with his capacity to overlap and his lightning speed one of the reasons that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe’s eye has been caught.

How good is Samuel Lino?

Lino has been LaLiga’s outstanding wing-back or full-back so far this season, according to data analytics experts SciSports.

The 23-year-old is outperforming the likes of Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Barcelona’s Joao Cancelo, with his crossing dribbling and finishing his outstanding attributes.

He also has defensive qualities, with his recoveries rating particularly highly.

His role at Newcastle, however, would be different to the one that he has at Atletico Madrid. Simeone has typically favoured a 3-5-2 formation in the Spanish capital this season, whereas Newcastle have primarily been using a 4-3-3 system.

Lino would seem to fit in on the left of the Newcastle attack, where Anthony Gordon has been operating. Although he is a player who loves to be involved around the box, his decision-making is an area of his game that needs to be refined, and while that may come with maturity, it suggests he is not a ready starter in this area yet.

Nevertheless, having a player of his profile would also allow Eddie Howe the flexibility to change into a 3-5-2 formation with no problems.

Newcastle face a battle to sign Lino, with Atletico Madrid reportedly not considering a sale at present and the player said to be comfortable with his present situation at the Spanish title challengers.
