Goal machine REJECTS Chelsea move
Chelsea’s hopes of signing a striker in January have taken a blow after Viktor Gyokeres appeared to reject a move to Stamford Bridge.
Gyokeres has been a revelation ever since joining Sporting Lisbon from Coventry for €20 million plus €4m in bonuses during the summer.
The 25-year-old Swede has scored a fantastic 17 goals in 20 games in all competitions for Sporting, leading to strong interest from a number of top European clubs.
Chelsea, in particular, have been heavily linked with making a move for Gyokeres during the January transfer window.
But when asked about a January move, Gyokeres appeared to reject any interest in leaving Sporting.
What did Gyokeres say about Chelsea move?
“I think it’s a bit like when Sporting came in to sign me… I’m very happy here and I don’t care about any interested parties at the moment,” he told Record.
“I’m enjoying every day here and not thinking about what’s going on around me. Yes, there’s talk of big clubs, but for now it’s just news. That’s all. Yes. This is where I want to stay.”
Chelsea are in the market for a top-class number nine during the January window.
The Blues have a number of top strikers on their shortlist, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
Chelsea have struggled to score goals consistently this season and are only the ninth best scorers in the Premier League.
This reflects their league position, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggling down in eleventh position with only six wins from 18 games.
They have no players in double figures for goals this season, with Nicolas Jackson the top scorer with eight in all competitions, followed by Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer with six.
Chelsea are next in action on Wednesday evening when they play Crystal Palace.
