10 Premier League players who could move in January

The 2024 January window is right around the corner and clubs across Europe are finalising their transfer plans in a bid to maximise their potential this season.

That fact certainly applies to all 20 Premier League clubs, with all 20 teams likely to spend big in an effort to ensure this campaign is a success.

Given the vast amount of money involved in the English top flight, it’s set to be another busy - and expensive - window and the big clubs will be at the heart of the transfer action.

While much of the transfer talk will be about incomings, outgoings are just as important and could be extremely significant this time around.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through 10 Premier League players who could leave their current clubs in January.

Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek’s Manchester United career has been a disaster. The Dutchman was signed as a player capable of rotating with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, but he’s fallen by the wayside in recent years.

The former Ajax star has played just two minutes of Premier League action this campaign, despite the fact Erik ten Hag is Man Utd’s manager, and is almost certain to leave in January.

Eintracht Frankfurt are currently leading the race to sign Van de Beek on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Jadon Sancho

Just like Van de Beek, Jadon Sancho has been frozen out at Man Utd, with the Englishman not featuring since his public bust-up with Ten Hag in September.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund winger has refused to apologise for his actions, despite being requested to by his Man Utd peers, and now looks set for a mid-season departure.

Juventus are one of several clubs to have been linked with a move in recent weeks.

Joao Palhinha

Fulham almost lost Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through on Deadline Day.

Despite signing a new contract at Craven Cottage, the Portuguese international could still be on his way out in January and Bayern remain keen on landing him.

Arsenal are also in the race, however, following Aston Villa’s mammoth asking price for Douglas Luiz, as exclusively reported by FootballTransfers.

Thomas Partey

In November, sources told FootballTransfers that Mikel Arteta has no intention of selling Thomas Partey in January as he still views the former Atletico Madrid star as a key player at the Emirates Stadium.

However, there is significant interest from abroad, most notably Juventus, and reports suggest that Massimiliano Allegri’s side have stepped up their pursuit following Paul Pogba’s suspension for doping.

If Partey does leave, then Arsenal would be fairly light in central midfield, meaning his sale may only be sanctioned if a replacement is lined up - potentially Palhinha.

Emile Smith Rowe

Emile Smith Rowe is the second Arsenal player on this list and he isn't the last.

The Englishman is simply out of favour in north London and looks as though he needs a move away to save his career. Arteta clearly doesn’t fancy deploying Smith Rowe in any role and his tally of just 104 Premier League minutes this season proves that.

Aston Villa are sniffing around and FootballTransfers understand that Smith Rowe will be sold if a suitable offer is tabled.

Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal want to sign an elite number nine to compete with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah may be offloaded in order for that to happen, we have been told.

Arteta has agreed that Nketiah may be sacrificed if necessary in order for the Gunners to sign a prolific replacement.

Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic, Ivan Toney and Benjamin Sesko are all options that Arsenal like, FootballTransfers can confirm, but a move for any of those options might only be sanctioned if Nketiah is sold.

Aaron Ramsdale

David Raya is the clear first-choice at Arsenal and while he is only on loan from Brentford, it’s expected that he will be signed permanently next summer.

Before his arrival, FootballTransfers reported that the Spaniard would replace Aaron Ramsdale as the Gunners’ number one goalkeeper and that has proven correct.

The England international may stick it out until next summer, but his place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad is at risk if he doesn’t play, which could lead to a January exit - either on loan or on a permanent deal.

Trevoh Chalobah

Mauricio Pochettino still wants new additions at Chelsea and his January demands include signing a new defender.

That request has harmed Trevoh Chalobah’s chances of extending his time at Stamford Bridge even further. The former Lorient loanee was expected to leave during the summer, but moves to Bayern Munich and Nottingham Forest didn’t materialise, and a January departure is now inevitable.

He hasn’t featured so far this season due to injury and it’s likely that Chalobah has already played his final Chelsea game.

Ian Maatsen

The story with Ian Maatsen is similar to Chalobah. The Blues wanted to offload him this summer, but he refused to join Burnley after a Transfer Deadline Day bid was accepted.

Despite a promising pre-season, the Dutchman is not in favour under Pochettino, who clearly doesn’t view him as a dependable left-back.

Maatsen has been linked with several top clubs, including Barcelona, and a move in January is likely, even though he’s featured in two of Chelsea’s past three games.

Ivan Toney

The final player on the list of Premier League stars who could leave in January is Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

The former Peterborough forward is currently serving a footballing ban after pleading guilty to over 200 betting breaches, but he is allowed to return to action in mid-January.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham and Newcastle have all expressed their interest since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, and while a summer exit may be more likely, Toney could well leave Brentford in January.
