Getafe star Borja Mayoral has reacted with surprise to reports that Arsenal are trying to sign him this month.

Mayoral has been in outstanding form this season for Europe-chasing Getafe, scoring 12 goals in 18 games.

Only Jude Bellingham has scored more goals this season than Mayoral in the Spanish La Liga.

Mayoral’s form has led to him being heavily linked with a January move to Arsenal.

What di Mayoral say?

“It is news that has surprised me too,’ Mayoral said.

“I have not spoken with the club or with my representative. I am very focused on Getafe, on a day-to-day basis.”

Arsenal would ideally like to sign a top striker during January.

The Gunners’ one big weakness over the last couple of seasons has been the absence of a prolific number nine.

Gabriel Jesus has performed well in all-round play but doesn’t score enough goals. Meanwhile, alternatives like Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz have also not done enough when played in that role.

As a result Arsenal have been planning to sign a top striker, and have shortlisted the likes of Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Ivan Toney.

The latest to be added to the list is former Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said last week that it would not be easy to sign a striker in January.

‘At the moment, it doesn’t look realistic,’ Arteta said following Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool.

‘What my job is and what we have to do is improve our players and try to get somewhere with the players we have and get better results.’

Arsenal are believed to lack funds this month to sign a striker.

Mayoral is valued at around €45 million.
