Liverpool to make star a 'top earner' to avoid exodus after Klopp news
Liverpool may be set to lose Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season but the Anfield side are determined to keep hold of their star players in the process by making Trent Alexander-Arnold one of their highest earners at the club.
The Reds were rocked by the news this week that Klopp will be leaving the club in the summer following nine years in charge and the announcement led to some concerns over the implications on the future of some of their top stars.
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk both have 18 months left on their contract and there had been suggestions that both players may also be sold as Liverpool consider a rebuild in the post-Klopp era.
And while there are yet to be developments on their futures, HITC have revealed that Liverpool’s ‘priority’ is to tie Alexander-Arnold down to a long-term contract, with his deal also set to expire in 2025.
The 25-year-old has been back to his best for Liverpool this season and has even captained the team on a number of occasions, leading to contact already being made with Alexander-Arnold’s camp over a renewal.
Liverpool are said to be ‘confident’ over tying the right-back down to a new deal and they are pushing to strike an agreement ‘sooner rather than later’ as the club ‘loath’ the idea of him entering the final 12 months of his contract.
Alexander-Arnold form looking to give Klopp a silverware send-off
Alexander-Arnold had endured a rough period at Liverpool last season, which saw his position for both club and country come into question after a series of high-profile mistakes.
But the England international has been integral to Liverpool’s title challenge this season, providing two goals and nine assists in all competitions.
Liverpool are still competing on all four fronts this season as they sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League, having qualified for the Carabao Cup final as well as the knockouts of the Europa League and the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The club are determined to finish Klopp’s era on a high and not let his departure distract them from their goals on the pitch, as well as destablise the club off the pitch with their transfer and contractual business.
