Man Utd ready to spend €50m on Italian wonderkid wanted by Real Madrid
Manchester United are reportedly ready to activate the €50 million release clause in Giorgio Scalvini’s Atalanta contract as Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his defensive options.
Scalvini, 20, has been linked with an exit for several months after his impressive form at Atalanta, with La Liga giants Real Madrid among the clubs keen on signing him, according to multiple reports.
Serie A clubs Juventus and Inter Milan have also expressed their desire to land Scalvini, while Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Man Utd have all been linked too.
However, Man Utd are now leading the race to sign the Italy international, as per Tuttosport, and they are willing to activate his €50m release clause, according to multiple sources, including Spanish publication Nacional.
Signing a new centre-back is deemed a priority by the Man Utd hierarchy due to the fact that Jonny Evans is due to become a free agent this summer and Raphael Varane could leave amid Saudi Pro League interest.
Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo has also been targeted, although Tottenham and Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the talented Frenchman.
What has Fabrizio Romano said about Giorgio Scalvini’s potential transfer?
In October, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano spoke about Scalvini on his YouTube channel and revealed: “Many of you have been asking me about Italian talents and today I wanted to mention Giorgio Scalvini.
“He is one of the most talented centre-backs in Italy, [and he is] always doing great for Atalanta and he can play in a three at the back or a four at the back.
“What I can tell you is that important clubs around Europe are sending their scouts to keep an eye on Scalvini. From what I’m hearing, two important English clubs were in attendance [for Atalanta matches] in the past three or four weeks to keep an eye on Scalvini.
“At the moment I’m not allowed to share the names of the clubs, but I will keep you posted about that very soon. For Scalvini there is a lot of interest.
“He is considered as one of the most talented Italian players at the moment, doing great for Atalanta, and so keep an eye on him because Premier League clubs are moving around.”
