The Dutchman nodded home Andrew Robertson’s free-kick with serious venom, before wheeling away in celebration after beating Ben Chilwell in the air to bag the opening goal at Wembley.

However, his joy was soon ended by VAR, who recommended an on-field review for an offside decision. Van Dijk himself was standing in an onside position, but his Japanese team-mate Endo was offside when Robertson took the Liverpool free-kick.

While Endo did not influence Van Dijk, he did block Chelsea defender Levi Colwill from reaching the ball.

In a controversial decision, referee Chris Kavanagh ruled out Van Dijk’s goal due to the fact Endo was in an offside position and he was adjudged to have impacted the game by blocking Colwill.

The decision was yet another point of contention for Jurgen Klopp, who had already expressed his anger at the refereeing team after Moises Caicedo’s nasty challenge on Ryan Gravenberch resulted in the Dutchman being forced off the pitch on a stretcher.

However, VAR’s decision to rule out Van Dijk’s goal was a far more controversial decision that enabling Caicedo to escape without a red card and Liverpool fans were quick to publicly state their anger at VAR on social media.
