What is Ruben Amorim's release clause? David Ornstein reveals cost of Chelsea target
Chelsea and other interested parties have been told how much they will have to pay if they want to appoint Ruben Amorim as manager.
David Ornstein has revealed that there is a €10 million release clause in Amorim’s contract at Sporting Lisbon.
What is Ruben Amorim's release clause?
“Ruben Amorim’s got a release clause in his contract,” Ornstein said.
“It was, I think a year ago when Chelsea spoke to him, it was up at €20m.
“Now I understand it’s €10m, which people might feel is low, especially if it was a player signing. But that is high for a managerial appointment, whether we like it or not.”
Amorim is regarded as one of the most promising young coaches in Europe.
The 39-year-old took charge of Sporting in 2020 and has earned rave reviews for the job he has done since.
He led Sporting to the league title in his first season, winning four trophies in total at the club.
Sporting are also second in the Primeira Liga this term with a game in hand to go top, while they are through to the last-16 of the Europa League.
Last season, Amorim’s Sporting famously knocked out Arsenal from the competition.
Amorim’s performances have led to strong interest from a number of top European clubs.
Chelsea have been heavily reported to be considering returning for Amorim this summer if they sack Mauricio Pochettino, who risks losing his job imminently according to journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Blues were in talks with Amorim a year ago before they eventually appointed Pochettino, who has struggled badly this season.
Chelsea know, though, that they will have to pay a €10m release clause if they want Amorim - not ideal given the club’s financial fair play restraints.
Other clubs such as Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also said to be watching on as all three teams need to appoint a new coach at the end of the season.
