Bayern make embarrassing Dier admission as Spurs star’s future decided
Bayern Munich have come to a decision over the future of on-loan Tottenham defender Eric Dier.
Dier was one of the surprises of the January transfer window as he joined former Spurs teammate Harry Kane at the Bundesliga giants on a temporary deal.
The 30-year-old England international, who has won 49 caps for his country, has suffered from a loss of form in recent seasons that culminated in Ange Postecoglou fielding him in only four Premier League matches this season.
Given this background, a switch to Bayern came as a major shock.
Dier, though, has been given game time by Thomas Tuchel. He has started three Bundesliga matches and has appeared off the bench in two more.
But that could be about the sum total of his contribution to Bayern, who have slipped eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen and face the prospect of Champions League elimination after a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the last 16.
Dier not quick enough
According to Bild, Bayern have come to the conclusion that Dier is too slow to play with them. As such, he will be sent back to Tottenham at the end of the season.
Unfortunately for FCB, this is an issue that could have been predicted by Postecoglou, who left Dier on the periphery of his Tottenham plans.
Although no reason was given by the Australian boss why Dier was left out even in the midst of a crippling November injury crisis, the pace and mobility that he demands from his players was likely behind his decision to leave the Sporting CP academy product on the sidelines.
As such, he was always likely to be ill-suited to the Bundesliga, where concerns had been raised by Bayern fans even before he had stepped on the park for Tuchel’s side.
FCB have conceded six times in the 318 minutes that Dier has spent on the field, or once every 53 minutes on average.
