Sullivan is only 14 years old but has already taken the United States by storm, making his professional debut for Philadelphia Union II last weekend.

He came off the bench in an MLS Next Pro match for the Union against the New England Revolution II, delivering a game-winning assist for striker Sal Olivas.

City have been on Sullivan’s case for a long time with the midfielder being regarded as the finest academy prospect in the United States and one of the outstanding players in his age group anywhere in the world.

Sullivan will soon be eligible to make his first-team debut for the Union, when his homegrown player contract is finalised, according to the Athletic.

It was previously reported that Sullivan would move to Lommel in Belgium when he turned 16 as part of a deal with City, with the club also being owned by City Football Group, and then move to City two years later.

However, following talks between City and the Union, the new blueprint is for Sullivan to remain in MLS.

That said, should he outgrow the league then he could well be placed at another CFG club outside England.

Man City move for England U17 left back

Meanwhile, City are close to finalising a deal for the England under-17 left back Christian McFarlane, who is also in MLS, according to the Athletic.

McFarlane plays for New York City FC, Man City’s fellow CFG team, but has not yet made his first-team debut.

The 17-year-old was born in England but moved to New York aged three and will be eligible to move to City when he turns 18 in January.

He was the third-youngest player to sign an MLS professional deal in history when he agreed terms with NYCFC in 2021 aged only 14.

He made his England under-17 debut last September and featured for the side during this international break, scoring in a 5-0 win over Hungary at St George’s Park.
