Man Utd face €10m Champions League penalty
Manchester United will be hit by a penalty worth £10million every time they fail to achieve a spot in the Champions League, as per their fresh agreement with sportswear manufacturer Adidas.
Under the existing contract terms, the Red Devils would only incur a penalty solely if they failed to qualify for the Champions League for two consecutive seasons.
So far they with their deal with Adidas they have consistently secured participation in the European tournament.
But following the acquisition of a 10-year extension with Adidas last summer, new legislation regarding Champions League qualification have been negotiated and now they will be hit with a £10m penalty every time they fail to qualify, reports The Times.
Details of the possible deductions were mentioned in the Premier League giant’s financial report, which read: "As a result of the men's first team qualifying for the 2023-24 Champions League, no deductions are due under the original term. Under the extended term, this clause has been amended to state that a £10 million deduction will be applied for each year of non-participation in the Uefa Champions League."
Will Man Utd reach the Champions League?
Man Utd managed to achieve a spot in the competition last term but were unable to reach the knockout stages.
This season, the side are eight points off a spot, with Aston Villa occupying fourth in the table with ten games in the Premier League remaining.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s new co-owner, is set to inject a significant amount of cash for their summer transfer window so they can get up to speed for the next campaign.
