Southgate tipped to REJECT Man Utd this summer

Sam Allardyce has tipped Gareth Southgate to reject interest from Manchester United even if he leaves his post as England manager.

Southgate, 53, has been named as one of Man Utd’s priority targets to replace Erik ten Hag this summer, as per reports, with the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford currently uncertain.

The England boss is set to lead the Three Lions at the 2024 European Championship in Germany, but he could step down following the tournament. As a result, he has been heavily linked with the Man Utd job.

FootballTransfers understands that Thomas Frank is a more likely candidate to replace Ten Hag than Southgate, however, with the Red Devils appreciative of the job he has done at Brentford.

Furthermore, Allardyce believes that Southgate wouldn’t accept the Man Utd job this summer.

What has Sam Allardyce said?

Allardyce was asked about Southgate’s chances of becoming the next Man Utd manager and he told William Hill (as per GOAL): “I’m not so sure if Gareth walked away from the England job that he’d want the job at Manchester United, he’d want a rest!

“He’s feeling the pressure already at England, which is unbelievable at times, and yes it’s alright in the in between periods, but when it’s on, it’s really on.

“The difference with United is that it’s on every day, every week, every month, every year – the intrusion is never ending. I’m not sure he’d want that after all he’s done for England, he certainly wouldn’t want to jump into it straight away,” Allardyce continued.

“I think the speculation around Gareth Southgate going to Manchester United has come from the new owners that have come in. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come in and there’s enough pressure at Manchester United as it is being the manager, without that constant nagging in the back of your mind wondering whether Jim is really considering Gareth Southgate.

“I don’t know whether they have sat down Erik ten Hag and said: 'Look, this is not going to happen',” he concluded.
