Julian Nagelsmann has decided to extend his contract with the German national team.

The DFB boss had been the subject of intense speculation in recent months. Originally only tasked with leading the German national team until the Euro 2024 on home soil, Nagelsmann was expected to return to the club game in the summer.

With the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and his former club Bayern Munich all looking for a new coach for the 2024/25 campaign, the German was frequently associated with these jobs. Over the last week or so, things appeared to really heat up between Nagelsmann and Bayern, with the new club hierarchy seemingly determined to rectify the mistake the Bavarians made when they sacked him in 2023.

However, his agent Volker Struth confirmed on Wednesday that Bayern weren't the only club he was talking to, which reignited the links to Barcelona and Liverpool. Nagelsmann has now made a decision on his future - and it's surprising, to say the least.

Nagelsmann stays put

The DFB have announced that the 36-year-old tactician will stay on board with the German national team until the 2026 World Cup in North America.

It had become imperative for the German FA to tie Nagelsmann down to a new deal after the massive improvement the national team showed in victories over France and the Netherlands in March.

This is a decision of the heart," Nagelsmann said. "It is a great honour to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances we have the chance to inspire an entire country. The two wins against France and the Netherlands in March served as an appetiser."

"The enthusiasm of the fans really touched me. We now want to play a successful home European Championship together. Afterwards, my coaching team and I are really looking forward to the challenge of competing at a World Cup."
