According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Arsenal scouts were in attendance in Lisbon on Tuesday to watch Sporting Lisbon’s match against Benfica.

The scouts were there to watch Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, but also central defender Ousmane Diomande.

The game at the Estadio da Luz was a Portuguese Cup semi-final and it finished 2-2, with Sporting going through 4-3 on aggregate. Gyokeres grabbed an assist for Morten Hjulmand.

Most of the attention is said to have been on Gyokeres, who has emerged as one of Arsenal’s potential summer signings.

Arsenal move for Gyokeres

Arsenal are in the market for a top number nine who can score more goals than current first-choice central striker Gabriel Jesus.

While Jesus has impressed over the last two seasons in his overall play, he has not proved to be prolific enough for a team who wants to win the Premier League and challenge for the Champions League.

Jesus has just 19 goals in 60 appearances for Arsenal, a total that Gyokeres has doubled this season alone for Sporting Lisbon as he has 36 goals in all competitions.

Gyokeres has also contributed 14 assists this season, suggesting that he is much more than just a goalscorer.

Gyokeres has been a revelation ever since joining Sporting Lisbon from Coventry for €20 million plus €4m in bonuses last summer.

Gyokeres has a release clause of €100 million in his Sporting contract and it had been initially reported that the Portuguese side would demand this price in order to sell this summer.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport reported last month that Sporting will actually accept bids of €50m for the Sweden star.

Arsenal are leading the chase for Gyokeres, but face competition from Chelsea and AC Milan.
