Manchester United have struggled for quality in attack this season but the emergence of Amad Diallo has finally given Erik ten Hag enough reason to ensure that Antony never plays for the club again.

Ten Hag’s side kept their faint European hopes alive by beating Newcastle to ensure the battle for the top six will go down to the final day of the season, in part due to a man of the match display from Diallo, with the former Atalanta star scoring 8.3 on FootballCritic.

The 21-year-old grabbed a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win at Old Trafford in just his second Premier League start for the club, with his first coming last week against Arsenal.

The performance equalled Antony’s total output from 29 games this season and Diallo’s two goal contributions in one game is something the Brazilian has done just once in his 54 Premier League appearances.

With United looking to cash in on fringe players this summer, Antony is believed to be one of the leading candidates to be sold just two years after his €95 million transfer from Ajax.

Although United will not recoup their staggering investment in Antony, the club should cut their losses and persist with Diallo to usher in a new, youthful era next season.

Diallo finally proving worth to Ten Hag after difficult season

Diallo impressed on loan at Sunderland last season, where he scored 13 goals, and he has finally broken into Ten Hag’s side after returning from a long-term injury in January.

But despite his return to fitness and scoring the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup in March, the game against Newcastle was just Diallo’s sixth appearance since then.

Ten Hag appears to finally have listened to the calls from United supporters who have been desperate for Diallo to be given more game time, with Antony slowly losing the faith of his once-loyal manager.

Just five of Antony’s last 15 appearances have been starts and the 24-year-old has done nothing during his time in England to convince Ten Hag or the club that he is capable of consistently performing to a Premier League standard.

Diallo’s development has shown just how much potency the club have lacked down the right flank and the winger’s link-up with youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund is evidence that United’s future should not contain Antony.
