What managers are available and where could they go?

This summer promises to be the most active managerial merry-go-round of all-time, with several big clubs needing to appoint a new head coach.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Napoli and Brighton & Hove Albion all need to find a new manager, while many other teams could find themselves in a managerial predicament very shortly.

With an unprecedented number of head coach changes set to happen during the 2024 summer transfer window, FootballTransfers runs through the managers who could move clubs.

Roberto De Zerbi

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Brighton & Hove Albion)

Linked with: Chelsea, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Man Utd

Brighton announced Roberto De Zerbi’s slightly surprising departure before their final game of the 2023-24 Premier League season and the Seagulls are now on the hunt for a successor.

With regards to De Zerbi himself, the Italian has been linked with numerous clubs over the past few months, including Chelsea, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

Some reports state interest from Chelsea isn’t particularly high, although he was initially the bookies’ favourite to replace Mauricio Pochettino. Brighton’s poor end to the season may have harmed his reputation, although a return to Italy is on the cards.

Mauricio Pochettino

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Chelsea)

Linked with: Bayern Munich, Man Utd, England national team, Saudi Pro League

Mauricio Pochettino himself will need to find a new club after he left Chelsea by mutual consent.

We understand that Pochettino has significant interest from the Saudi Pro League, while he has also been linked with replacing Gareth Southgate in the England set-up after Euro 2024.

Bayern Munich have registered interest following his emerging availability, and the Argentine is reportedly open to joining Man Utd too.

Graham Potter

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Chelsea)

Linked with: Man Utd, Ajax, Brighton, England national team

Graham Potter’s spell at Chelsea didn’t go as planned, yet he remains linked with several big clubs, including Man Utd.

A move to Ajax seems unlikely, despite major interest, while a return to Brighton has been mooted following De Zerbi’s exit. Potter has also been heavily touted as a possible replacement for Southgate at England.

Massimiliano Allegri

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Juventus)

Linked with: Saudi Pro League

Massimiliano Allegri was sacked by Juventus following his behaviour following their Coppa Italia win over Atalanta and the only meaningful links are with the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Ittihad are reportedly interested in appointing the Juve club legend as Marcelo Gallardo’s replacement.

Thomas Tuchel

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Bayern Munich)

Linked with: Man Utd, Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel is one of the most high-profile available managers this summer after he rejected Bayern Munich’s offer of an extended stay at the club.

Old Trafford is his most likely destination, if Erik ten Hag is sacked, with Chelsea wanting to appoint a “young and progressive” head coach.

Antonio Conte

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Tottenham)

Linked with: Napoli, Chelsea

Antonio Conte was linked with a sensational return to Chelsea in the immediate aftermath of Pochettino’s departure, but the Blues will not re-appoint the Italian this summer.

A move to Napoli has also gone cold, despite prevalent links in recent weeks.

Jose Mourinho

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Roma)

Linked with: Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Saudi Pro League

A return to Chelsea was speculated by fans, but Mourinho’s time in a top five European league appears to be over following his AS Roma exit in January 2024.

Fenerbahce and Besiktas have both registered their interest in bringing the Special One to Turkey, while numerous Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Ittihad, have also been linked with a move.

Hansi Flick

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at Germany)

Linked with: Barcelona, Chelsea, Man Utd

Hansi Flick has been out of work since being sacked by Germany following their disastrous 2022 World Cup and he is the favourite for the Barcelona job if Xavi ends up leaving.

Flick has also been linked with Chelsea and Man Utd, but a move to Spain is seen as far more likely.

David Moyes

Current club: Unattached (Most recently at West Ham)

Linked with: Nobody

West Ham United have confirmed the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as David Moyes’ replacement, with the Scotsman sacked despite delivering the Europa Conference League trophy in 2023.

Moyes has hinted that he would be open to a move abroad, although he is yet to be linked with a new club.

Kieran McKenna

Current club: Ipswich Town

Linked with: Chelsea, Man Utd, Brighton

Kieran McKenna is the hottest managerial prospect in British football and his exploits at Ipswich Town have not gone unnoticed among Premier League circles.

The Northern Irishman has guided The Portman Road side to back-to-back promotions and they will play in the English top flight for the first time since 2002 next season.

However, Chelsea are interested in appointing McKenna as their Pochettino replacement, while he is also a leading contender for the vacant Brighton job. In addition, he is one of Man Utd’s preferred candidates in the event Ten Hag is sacked.

Vincent Kompany

Current club: Burnley

Linked with: Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Brighton

Vincent Kompany is in negotiations with Bayern Munich regarding the vacant position at the Allianz Arena.

Despite his relegation from the Premier League with Burnley, the Belgian impressed with his dominant Championship title win and is currently the leading contender to replace Tuchel in Bavaria.

Chelsea and Brighton are also interested in appointing Kompany.

Thomas Frank

Current club: Brentford

Linked with: Chelsea, Man Utd

Thomas Frank has hinted that he would be open to a Brentford exit if a big club comes calling and he is on the radar of both Chelsea and Man Utd, we understand.

The Dane has worked wonders at Brentford, but a summer departure is a possibility. He is seemingly not the first-choice option for Chelsea or Man Utd, though.

Enzo Maresca

Current club: Leicester

Linked with: Chelsea

Enzo Maresca helped Leicester City win the Championship title during his first season in management, although their awful mid-season form almost led to a historic collapse.

Chelsea are, however, interested in appointing Pep Guardiola’s former assistant as Pochettino’s successor.

Ruben Amorim

Current club: Sporting CP

Linked with: Chelsea

Ruben Amorim has been linked with a Premier League move for several years, with Liverpool and West Ham touted as possible destinations earlier this year.

But, Arne Slot and Lopetegui were chosen for those two jobs and a move to Chelsea is his final chance of securing a job in England this summer.

However, he has told the media that he will be staying at Sporting for the 2024-25 season.

Thiago Motta

Current club: Bologna

Linked with: Juventus, Chelsea

Thiago Motta guided Bologna to Champions League qualification in 2023-24, but he is almost certain to leave the Serie A club this summer.

Chelsea have registered their interest following Pochettino’s exit, although Motta is almost guaranteed to join Juventus.

Sebastian Hoeness

Current club: Stuttgart

Linked with: Chelsea

Chelsea are huge admirers of Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeness, although he is reportedly not willing to leave the Bundesliga club.

Hoeness is greatly admired after the fantastic job he has done at Stuttgart, but the Blues will seemingly struggle to convince him to leave Germany.

Michel

Current club: Girona

Linked with: Chelsea

Michel has worked wonders since arriving at Girona and he is on Chelsea’s managerial shortlist, we have been informed.

However, a move to Stamford Bridge seems slightly unlikely as things stand.
