Manchester City target Lucas Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association for alleged breaches of betting rules.

An FA statement said: "It's alleged that he [Paqueta] directly sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in these matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting."

The midfielder has been one of City's top transfer targets for a while, with Pep Guardiola's side holding talks with West Ham over a potential deal last year.

And, the Premier League champions were expected to return for the Brazilian this summer, after he enjoyed another productive season.

He registered four goals and six assists from midfield in 31 league games and has become a real fan favourite at the London Stadium.

As one of the top players outside of the 'big six' clubs in England, it seemed only a matter of time before he took on a new challenge, but a potential move to the Etihad Stadium now seems unlikely.

Lucas Paqueta on FA charge

Paqueta took to social media to deny any wrongdoing. "I am extremely surprised and upset that The FA has decided to charge me," he said.

"For nine months, I have cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can.

"I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name.

"Due to the ongoing process, I will not be providing any further comment."
