Manchester United have parted ways with Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman's stint at Old Trafford has come to an end after two seasons. Ten Hag is coming off a dire campaign in which he led the Red Devils to their lowest league finish since 1990 but still managed to get into the Europa League due to upsetting Man City in the FA Cup final.

However, that triumph was not enough to conceal the fact that the 54-year-old oversaw a season that must largely be considered a failure. Though Ten Hag helped young players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo establish themselves as key players, the team ultimately took a backward step, partially caused by injuries.

Stale tactics and uninspired performances ultimately cost Ten Hag, with his side merely mustering eighth place in the Premier League, while also crashing out of the Champions League group stage in embarrassing fashion.

Man Utd sack Ten Hag

The news of Ten Hag's sacking is ultimately an unsurprising one. New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS allies had analysed the Dutchman's work for weeks and were evidently not impressed despite some good results in the final games of the season.

Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford with two trophies in two seasons under his belt. The Dutchman claimed the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 and, as mentioned, the FA Cup in 23/24.

Ultimately, however, Ten Hag won't be remembered fondly, having fallen out with several big-name players during his time at the club, most notably club legend Cristiano Ronaldo and expensive acquisition Jadon Sancho. There were also headline-making incidents involving Marcus Rashford and Garnacho.

The 54-year-old was sacked after a season that saw Man Utd muster an impressive record of 26 wins, seven draws and 19 defeats in 52 games across all competitions.
