Five stars with 12 months on their contract who could leave this summer
Most of the focus in the 2024 summer transfer market is naturally on who clubs are buying and selling now in the current window.
However, a big consideration for all clubs is looking further ahead at players whose contracts expire in the summer of 2025.
Clubs want to avoid losing players on a free transfer so many will choose to sell stars a year from expiry if they don’t pen a new contract.

We look at five big-name players who fall into this category.
Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)
Chelsea are poised to finally sell Conor Gallagher this summer to Atletico Madrid.
Gallagher’s contract expires in 2025 and there had been little headway over a new contract.
The midfielder is also not considered a key player in new manager Enzo Maresca’s plans so the club have made the decision to sell.
Atletico Madrid were expected to complete a deal for around €40 million but the deal initially fell through. The transfer has been resurrected and should be official next week.

Federico Chiesa (Juventus)
Juventus will sell Chiesa this summer having made it clear he has no future at the club.
Chiesa’s contract expires in 2025, and contract talks have now ended.
Juventus are unwilling to match Chiesa’s demands of €7 million per season due to his constant injuries.
He missed most of 2022 with an ACL injury and has suffered 10 different physical problems in the last 18 months after returning.
Chiesa has yet to return to the levels that saw him exploded as one of Europe’s best wingers at Euro 2020, and this is another reason Juventus are reluctant to give him a big contract.
New Juventus manager Thiago Motta also doesn't have Chiesa in his plans.
So far there has been no concrete offers for Chiesa, though.
Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)
Alphonso Davies is looking increasingly likely to leave Bayern Munich, either this summer or next.
The Bundesliga champions have offered Davies a new contract that runs until 2029 with a gross salary of €14 million per year, according to Sky Sports Deutschland, but he has yet to accept it.
Real Madrid want to sign Davies, and it seems as if the left back also wants to make the move.
They are seeking to take advantage of Bayern’s fragile position and add him to their ranks for a reduced fee.
It is believed that Madrid want to sign Davies this summer but are not prepared to pay over the odds for a player with one year left on his contract.
So Madrid could wait it out for 12 months and sign Davies on a free transfer in 2025.
Jonathan David (Lille)
This could be the summer that Jonathan David finally leaves Lille.
His contract expires in 2025 and he has made it clear that he will not be extending.
Having been one of Europe’s most consistent goalscorers in recent years, there will no shortage of interest in David with Premier League and Serie A clubs watching closely.
Ivan Toney (Brentford)
Ivan Toney's contract expires in 2025 and it has been clear for months now that he will not sign a new one.
Brentford know they must sell this summer or lose their star striker for nothing next year.
Toney wants to leave this summer and there have been links with every major club in England.
However, precious little has so far materialised in terms of concrete offers for a player who failed to impress upon his return in January from a months-long gambling ban, though he did briefly show how impactful he can still be at Euro 2024.
Despite interest from many clubs, no bid has been tabled for a player said to be valued at between €40 million and €60m. This is a sizeable outlay for a 28-year-old.
He could still leave, though, later in the window if Brenford reduce his asking price.
