Alexander-Arnold’s future is very much up for discussion currently as his contract at Liverpool expires in 2025.

This summer will thus be a key one for Alexander-Arnold; if he does not sign a new contract there is every chance that Liverpool will decide to sell him.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of Alexander-Arnold and have been tipped to make a move as they look for a long-term successor to the ageing Dani Carvajal.

However, Petit believes that joining Real Madrid would be a mistake as the Blancos fans will get on his back if he makes defensive mistakes.

What did Petit say?

“For generations, hardly any English players have gone abroad. Is it time for Trent to look for a new challenge? Personally, I’d like to think he will take more responsibility next season and relish his leadership role,” Petit told Grosvenor Sport.

“Sometimes, the grass is not greener and I don’t have the feeling that Trent will support the pressure from Real Madrid. He’s in a cocoon at Liverpool, surrounded by love and support and will rarely miss a game.

“If he plays like he does defensively at Real Madrid, I don’t think the fans will accept that, too, so he may be better off staying in his comfort zone.”

Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool and grew up in the club’s youth academy from the age of six.

He made his senior debut for Liverpool at the age of 18 in 2016 and went on to become a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s successful era at the club.

Famed for his brilliant right-foot, vision and long cross-field passes, Alexander Arnold has made over 300 appearances for Liverpool.

He has won seven trophies with Liverpool, including the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League.

He has been capped 23 times by England but has never had the same trust from his country as he has had at his club.
