Arsenal have been told by one of their leading players that he would leave the club “tomorrow” if the prospect of completing his “dream” transfer emerged.

Gabriel joined the Gunners in 2020 in a €26 million deal from Lille, and while he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s outstanding defenders, the 26-year-old says that he would pack his bags immediately if he could leave for his boyhood team.

The rangy centre-back, who has struck up an outstanding partnership with William Saliba at Mikel Arteta’s side, admits that he has a burning desire to play for Corinthians.

"Corinthians, that’s since I was born and today I don’t think it has to be any different. I still go to Corinthians games by train. It’s my dream, I want to play for Corinthians, I want to feel that energy," he said in quotes relayed by The Mirror.

"It’s something to think about. Sometimes I stop and think, 'Do you dream of playing for Corinthians?' I do. 'When would you play for Corinthians?' For me, I’d be at Corinthians tomorrow.

"I hope it doesn’t take too long because I want to feel the energy of those fans, who are incredible, as soon as possible."

Gabriel going nowhere for now

Gabriel will have to wait for that dream. He remains under contract with the Emirates side until 2027 and there is no sign that Arteta is seeking a replacement for a star with an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €41 million.

While there have been rumours that Arsenal may recruit a younger centre-back to supplement the Gabriel and Salbia combination, there is no prospect of either player losing their place in the starting XI ahead of the 2024/25 season, in which Arteta’s men are again expected to challenge Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League.
