Fabrizio Romano reveals Arsenal signing 'closer'

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is closing in on a new deal with the club, according to Fabrizio Romano.

After leading the Gunners to second place in the Premier League in successive seasons, the club are looking to tie him down on an extended deal.

Arteta was appointed head coach at his former club in 2019 and led them to a FA Cup win in 2020 after they beat Manchester City 2–0 in the semi-final and Chelsea in the final.

He has since grown the side and led them to title charges over the past couple of campaigns. Now Romano has said that the Spaniard is close to signing a fresh deal.

“The negotiation between Arsenal and the agents of Mikel Arteta are going very well. The contract extension of Arteta at Arsenal is getting closer. There is confidence that it will get done very soon. He wants to continue at Arsenal, Arsenal want to continue with him. His mission is to continue at the club with a new contract,” said the Italian.

It comes after FootballTransfers’ story that Arteta put pen to paper on his new contract and hierarchy aims to announce this before the start of the new season.

While the exact length of the contract and the extent of the pay rise remain uncertain, it's anticipated to span for another three years, sources within Arsenal informed us that the time.

The Spaniard is held in high esteem by club executives and terms have been thrashed out behind closed doors, extending his current deal which ends in June 2025, but an official announcement won’t be made until some time after the conclusion of the current campaign.

Last season under Arteta, the Gunners' victory at Manchester United broke the record for the club’s most Premier League wins in a season (27) with one game to spare.
