The United States men's national team left-back has become the latest Blues recruit of what has once again been a busy summer transfer window. Wiley joins Chelsea from Atlanta United for a fee in the region of €10 million.

The 19-year-old has signed a seven-year contract with the west London giants and will spend his first season in European football on loan at BlueCo affiliate Strasbourg. The Ligue 1 side were already keen on signing the American wonderkid in the winter.

Following the conclusion of next season, Wiley will be hoping to compete for a starting berth at Stamford Bridge. Renato Veiga has also been signed by Chelsea this summer, with the Portuguese also expected to battle for a spot at left-back.

Compared to Veiga, Wiley is a much more traditional left-back and will offer Chelsea something different due to his insatiable drive to get forward and attack.

Wiley arrives with a big reputation

Despite his tender years, Wiley is already a senior USA international, having earned his first cap in 2023. Indeed, last year, the teenager enjoyed a real breakout campaign in Major League Soccer.

Wiley became a regular starter for Atlanta United and impressed massively with the Five Stripes, netting four goals and providing four assists over the course of the regular season and playoffs.

The 19-year-old also featured on MLS's 22 under 22 list, ranking the best players aged 22 or younger. Wiley came ninth and firmly established himself as one of the league's most exciting prospects.

With Atlanta United mightily struggling in 2024, Wiley's production also suffered, but the American is clearly still held in high regard and will feature for the USMNT at the Olympics in Paris. Strasbourg and Chelsea have got themselves an eminently talented prospect.
