That is according to Gianluca Di Marzio, who reports that Marseille are expecting the final approval from Greenwood in the coming hours.

Once this approval is given, Marseille will rubber-stamp the deal having already agreed a transfer fee with Man Utd.

The Ligue 1 club last week agreed a deal that will see them pay Man Utd €27.6 million for the 22-year-old, plus a further €4m in potential add-ons, according to David Ornstein.

Although the deal has been agreed between Marseille and Man Utd, Greenwood himself is yet to accept the move. That will arrive imminently, according to Di Marzio.

Greenwood hasn’t played for Man Utd since he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault. The Englishman’s charges were dropped after key witnesses pulled out last year and he returned to football with a loan spell at Spanish side Getafe.

He scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances for the club as they finished 12th in the LaLiga table.

Lazio, Juventus, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund have all been linked with signing Greenwood in recent months, but a move to Marseille will take place if he gives his approval.

New Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi recently commented on his club’s pursuit of Greenwood. He told the media: “Mason is a world class player but we have not recruited him yet.

“I don't know what happened but I am not used to get involved in my players' private life. But if he comes here, you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons. I can tell them off in private but I would never attack them in public.”

Marseille fans protest Greenwood signing

As relayed by RMC, scores of Marseille supporters took to social media, primarily X, to voice their opposition to this potential transfer with #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

The mayor of Marseille also voiced his opposition to the signing.

Mayor Benoit Payan told French radio station RMC: "I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable."

Nevertheless, Marseille are still expected to sign Greenwood.
