Southgate resigns: Seven managers who could become new England coach
Gareth Southgate has resigned from his role as England manager.
The 53-year-old announced his departure from the Three Lions after overseeing another defeat in a European Championship final. Southgate had led England to the showpiece event of both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 but failed at the final hurdle against Italy and Spain, respectively.
Despite performances leaving a lot to be desired at the tournament in Germany, the former Middlesbrough boss leaves with his head held high, having managed to detoxify the England environment and turn the side into a powerhouse after years of underperformance.

Now, the FA are tasked with finding a suitable successor and there are several high-profile options available right now. Former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter is currently the favourite, according to the bookies.
Having turned down several important projects in recent months, such as the one at Ajax, the England job could appeal to Potter, who has been out of a job for well over a year.

Next on the list of favourites for the Three Lions manager position is Lee Carsley, the current England U21 boss. Having won the U21 Euros in 2023, Carsley will be intimately familiar with several current players and the next generation coming through, so he appears a potentially sensible in-house hire.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is also among the top options for the England gig. Howe has long since been admired by the FA and with his position at St. James' Park not entirely secure, he could soon become available.
The first foreign manager on the list of favourites is Thomas Tuchel, who is desperate to manage in England again after his Bayern Munich exit. The German has admitted that he loved his time at Chelsea and that he wants to return to the UK.

Ex-Chelsea and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino also features on the list, as does legendary Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The German, however, has no intention to get back in the game so soon after leaving Anfield and recently rejected an approach from the USA.
Finally, former Chelsea and Everton head coach and club legend Frank Lampard is an available option. The ex-Three Lions midfielder has been out of a job since leaving his post at Stamford Bridge for a second time in 2023.
