The 20-year-old, who won Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year award in May, was not included in Enzo Maresca’s pre-season squad and he is now on the verge of leaving the club on loan.

Gilchrist has opted to join Sheff Utd, amid significant interest from multiple Championship clubs, and he will reportedly undergo his medical with the Blades on Tuesday.

Gilchrist signed his first professional contract with Chelsea back in 2020 and he made his first-team debut for the club during a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in December last year.

He went on to make a further 16 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign, and he scored his first goal for the club in a 6-0 demolition of Everton.

A centre-back by trade, Gilchrist featured at right-back in his first senior season at Chelsea and could be deployed in a similar role at Bramall Lane this year.
