Chelsea are interested in Joe Gomez, according to a report.

As exclusively revealed by FootballTransfers and Anfield Watch in May, Liverpool star Gomez is keen on a change of scenery this summer. This has since been widely confirmed and the latest indication of this came on Saturday.

Gomez did not travel with Liverpool for their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town and Reds journalist Paul Joyce of The Times has emphasised that this is due to the defender exploring his options.

The versatile star is Liverpool's longest-serving player and has been with the Anfield club for almost a decade, joining as a highly-rated teenager from Charlton Athletic in 2015. Since then, he has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the club, playing all across the backline.

Chelsea eye Gomez

According to the above-mentioned report, Gomez, who recently returned to the England fold for the first time in several years, has no shortage of suitors. Joyce states that sides like Aston Villa, Fulham and Newcastle as well as foreign clubs are all interested in the 27-year-old.

More intriguingly, he also mentions Chelsea as one of the interested parties. Coach Enzo Maresca stated on Friday that he is hoping for more signings - despite double-digit arrivals at Stamford Bridge this summer - but links with Gomez come as a surprise.

Chelsea look well-stocked in defensive positions and, in fact, they are actively trying to force the likes of Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah out to reduce the size of their squad. A move for Gomez would be quite a shock.

Joyce insists that there is no guarantee that Gomez will be able to finalise a transfer before the end of the window. Liverpool are not actively pressing the issue - they are open to keeping him - and his Ipswich omission is simply the result of a 'grown-up discussion' between player and club.
