Talks between the two clubs have been at a complete standstill for several weeks but Romano says they have now sprung into action again.

The two European giants are now working on completing a deal that will see Ugarte sign for Man Utd on loan, with an obligation to buy clause attached to the move.

“Understand Manchester United are working on loan with obligation to buy proposal for Manuel Ugarte,” Romano tweeted on X.

“Negotiations to continue with this formula as Jorge Mendes’s leading talks with Paris Saint-Germain. Ugarte wants United, pushing a lot after personal terms agreed in July.”

United have made Ugarte their number one priority this summer to strengthen the centre of midfield.

They agreed personal terms with Ugarte back in July but have struggled until now to come to an agreement with PSG.

Ugarte, who wants to make the move, has been frozen out of the PSG squad this season.

Romano added that United also need to offload a player before they bring in Ugarte.

“They want to sign a new midfielder, for sure, that's the idea. But as always, the outgoings are always very important,” Romano added on Give Me Sport.

“So for example, yes, they signed Mazraoui and De Ligt, but they needed at least one outgoing, and it was actually Wan-Bissaka to West Ham.

“So they always need financial financial play, to have a kind of balance. The interest in Ugarte remains 100% and the interest from Ugarte to Manchester United's project remains, because they agreed on personal terms almost three or four weeks ago.

Ugarte at PSG

Ugarte signed for PSG for €60 million in the summer of 2023 from Sporting Lisbon as as the Ligue 1 giants executed the clause in his contract.

Big things were expected of Ugarte, who was one of the most wanted central midfielders in Europe at the time.

However, the 23-year-old struggled to live up to the hype during his first season at PSG.

Despite making 37 appearances in all competitions and winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions, Ugarte never managed to lock down a regular starting spot.

Manager Luis Enrique considered him as not a perfect fit for his style of play, leading to PSG being open to a sale in the summer of 2024.

Ugarte has made 22 appearances for the Uruguay national team, going to the 2022 World Cup and winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Copa America and also being named in that Team of the Tournament.
