Premier League squad rules

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be able to name a 25-man squad, which contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player (HGP) criteria.

On top of this, any players under the age of 21 will appear on another list and do not count towards the squad limit of 25. For the 2024/25 campaign, these players are born after 1 January, 2003.

What is a Home Grown Player?

Any player will be considered an HGP if they have been registered to a club in England or Wales (but not Scotland or Ireland), for a three-year period prior to their 21st birthday. This does not need to be continuous.

Although Jadon Sancho was excluded from the Man Utd squad to face Fulham on the opening day of the season, should he remain at Old Trafford, he stands a good chance of making the wider Premier League group.

Similarly, even if Man Utd land Manuel Ugarte, they are not under pressure to sell either Casemiro or Scott McTominay from a purely numbers perspective. Either could be sold to facilitate this deal, with the Scotland star looking likelier to move as Fulham and Napoli take an interest.

New additions to the squad this summer include Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee.

Big-money signing from Lille Leny Yoro does not go into the squad as he is U21.

On the other hand, Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo will graduate to the squad for the first time after turning 22 last season.

Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Harry Amass, Toby Collyer and Ethan Wheatley are all young enough to be included on the list of U21 players.
