Five possible Premier League breakout stars this season

The Premier League boasts some of the best players and managers in world football.

However, while big-name stars often dominate the headlines, a handful of lesser-known players always burst onto the scene every year.

Last season, Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo and Destiny Udogie were among the Premier League’s breakout stars.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through five players who could follow suit in 2024-25.

Oscar Bobb (Manchester City)

Oscar Bobb is a future superstar and he may finally be given a chance in the Manchester City first-team this season.

Reports suggest that Pep Guardiola’s side sold the aforementioned Palmer to Chelsea last summer in the knowledge that Bobb was capable of taking the Englishman’s place at the Etihad Stadium.

The Norwegian may not be able to emulate Palmer’s 2023-24 campaign, but he could be a key player for Man City this season.

He has two goals and three assists in four pre-season matches so far and with the vast majority of Man City’s squad yet to return following their international endeavours, Bobb may start the season as first-choice.

A tricky winger with exquisite close control, Bobb could become a regular at Man City and this season promises to be his breakout year.

Ronnie Edwards (Southampton)

English Football League fans will argue that Ronnie Edwards has already broken onto the senior scene, and with 142 first-team games for Peterborough under his belt, that assessment is probably correct.

However, he remains only 21 years old and following a €3.5 million move to newly-promoted Southampton, Edwards has the chance to become a household name in the top flight of English football.

Southampton are likely to struggle near the bottom of the table this season, but Edwards could stand out amongst his peers.

The centre-back, who helped England win the U19 Euros alongside Carney Chukwuemeka, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Jarell Quansah in 2022, was previously linked with Manchester United - which is testament to his immense talent.

Edwards could have a season similar to the one Harry Maguire enjoyed in 2016-17 at Hull City, and earn himself a big move away in the process.

Jack Hinshelwood (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Jack Hinshelwood made 17 first-team appearances for Brighton last season, and he picked up the club’s Young Player of the Year award after an impressive first season in senior football.

However, he remains a relative unknown to the vast majority of Premier League fans. That is expected to change this season.

The 19-year-old was an unlikely star under Roberto De Zerbi and he could become a regular in the starting XI under Fabian Hurzeler this season.

Capable of playing at right-back or in central midfield, Hinshelwood is extremely versatile and he is ready for a more enhanced role this campaign.

Joel Veltman, Tariq Lamptey, James Milner and Odeluga Offiah are also candidates for the right-back slot at the AMEX Stadium, but Hinshelwood has the potential to become a key player under Hurzeler.

Mikey Moore (Tottenham Hotspur)

Mikey Moore is only 16 years old, so he is extremely unlikely to play a prominent role at Tottenham this season.

However, his form in pre-season has been immense and he is one of the most talented 16-year-old’s in European football.

Moore is expected to become an England regular within the next decade and Ange Postecoglou could look to integrate him into the senior set-up at Spurs in 2024-25.

The winger, who scored four goals in four games at the U17 Euros earlier this year, won’t displace Tottenham’s most senior attacking options, but he could be handed numerous cameos during the upcoming campaign.

With two goals and one assist in pre-season, Moore has elevated himself up the pecking order in north London.

Lewis Hall (Newcastle United)

Lewis Hall is arguably already a household name so does this count as cheating? Perhaps. However, he will establish himself as England’s best left-back this season.

Sure, that’s a bold statement, but there is a method behind the madness.

The Chelsea academy graduate shone during a difficult 2022-23 campaign at Stamford Bridge and he impressed in a limited role at Newcastle last season.

Hall only played 775 Premier League minutes last season and is still just 19 years old, which is why he qualifies for this ‘breakout’ category.

Dan Burn may remain as Newcastle’s first-choice left-back, but Hall is simply levels above. His technical ability is top notch and he possesses all the skills necessary of a two-way full-back in the modern game.

Hall’s push for a starting spot at the 2026 World Cup starts now and his ‘breakout’ season will involve becoming one of the top three left-backs in the Premier League.
