Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes has been tipped to play for Barcelona, Real Madrid or even Manchester City, highlighting the blow it was to the Red Devils that he left Old Trafford without making a true impact.

Gomes departed Man Utd in 2020 to join Lille, where he has grown to become an England international and is set to star in the Champions League for the Ligue 1 side, who begin their campaign on Tuesday away to Sporting CP.

United legend Nicky Butt has urged the 24-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, not to rush away from Lille and back to England because he believes some giant sides could hunt him in the future.

“I think he can do better than some of the teams that will be in for him in the Premier League,” Butt is quote by Sky Sports as saying.

“The Spanish league is written all over for Angel. He could play in the Premier League easily. He could play for City tomorrow.

“When Angel left United, I said to him: ‘You’re going to go on and have an unbelievable career and I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up playing against Manchester United for Barcelona or Real Madrid in the next five, six, seven years.’ He was that good. And I’m not just saying that now that he’s made his England debut, I genuinely thought that a long time ago.”

Butt advises against Man Utd return

Despite Gomes’ outstanding form, Butt does not believe now is the ideal time to return to Old Trafford.

“He could play in the Premier League easily. He could play for City tomorrow,” the former England midfielder said.

“But then you put him in at Man United at the minute and he’s got to have the legs to go through the centre of midfield where there’s a massive gap, people run through the Man United midfield like you wouldn’t believe. Then it’s a really difficult game for him.”

Gomes was only on the bench for Lille as they lost to Saint-Etienne 1-0 on Friday, but is expected to start as they begin their Champions League campaign against Sporting in Lisbon.
