Barcelona and Real Madrid among elite clubs monitoring Greenwood

Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the four clubs looking at former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood, according to reports.

The youngster left United over the summer on a permanent deal to Marseille. Greenwood was arrested in 2022 for alleged attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, but the charges were dropped and no case went before a court.

Last season, Greenwood was on loan at Getafe from United, where he enjoyed a solid campaign, netting ten goals and providing six assists in 36 matches.

This season, he has scored five and assisted one in just four games, leading to interest from several top clubs. Outlet HITC have reported that "Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been watching Greenwood closely since his arrival in the South of France."

The publication also relays that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta of Barcelona both considered a move last summer, after being impressed with his La Liga season.

Last week, Marseille president Pablo Longoria stated that the head coach Roberto de Zerbi asked to sign Greenwood during his first conversation with the board following his appointment in June.

Speaking about the decision at the Thinking Football Summit, he added: "We took the decision internally. OK, there was some opposition, that was objective.

"But at the same time that gave us power to maybe not investigate, because I am not a judge, but to use all the information to take the best decision, which I think we did.

Greenwood in Ligue 1

Greenwood's form in Ligue prompted RMC pundit Daniel Riolo to describe his impact as 'extraordinary'. "In terms of pure quality, over the first three games, Greenwood is perhaps the best player in Ligue 1."

Speaking to the media ahead of his first game in charge against the Republic of Ireland in September, England head coach Lee Carsley said that Greenwood would not be called up to the national side while he is boss at least.

"Mason wasn't a player that we can consider, to be honest, no," he said. "I'm aware of how he's doing but he wasn't under consideration."
