The Italy international is widely regarded as one of the best in Europe in his role as a box-to-box all-action midfielder.
United believe that Barella is the man to really take their midfield to the level it is needed to challenge the best in the Premier League and Europe.
Any chances of success in bringing Barella to Old Trafford seem slim, however.

Barella only signed a new contract with Inter earlier this month until 2029.
The 27-year-old and his family are life-long supporters of Inter and he has a special affinity with the club.
He is expected by many to finish his career at San Siro.
A number of top Premier League clubs already made moves for him in the summer of 2023, including Chelsea and Man City, but Inter and Barella made it clear they had no intention of negotiating.
Barella at Inter
Barella joined Inter from Cagliari in 2019 for a transfer fee that would eventually reach €42.5 million.
He has since developed into one of the best central midfielders in world football.
Barella played a key role for Inter as they won their first Scudetto in 2021 in 11 years under manager Antonio Conte.
He played a key role again in the 2023-24 season as Inter stormed to another Scudetto under Simone Inzaghi.
He also enjoyed a fantastic Champions League season in 2022-23 as Inter finished runners-up to Manchester City.
This saw Barella nominated on the 30-man shortlist for the 2023 Ballon d'Or.
In total, he has made 240 appearances for Inter since joining from Cagliari, scoring 23 goals and winning seven trophies.
He has won 57 caps for Italy, scoring 10 goals. He played a key role in the Azzurri winning Euro 2020, scoring in the quarter final win over Belgium. He also played at Euro 2024, scoring against Albania.
