Erik ten Hag has been left devastated by his sacking by Manchester United, one of his close friends has admitted.

The Old Trafford club decided to relieve the manager of his duties on Monday following a 2-1 Premier League loss to West Ham.

They have acted swiftly to replace him with Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP, although the Portuguese is not expected to be in post until after the November international break.

Ten Hag has received a bumper payoff in the region of €17 million, but according to Hans Kraay Jr, an ESPN reporter but also a close friend of the former Man Utd boss, this huge sum of money has done little to soften the blow.

“I understand that if he is getting €17m, people will be saying: “Ten Hag will be somersaulting through the streets of Manchester.’ No, he’s completely devastated, completely ruined,” he said.

“At the moment, you don’t think about money. That will come later.

“I don’t have the impression I can call him to ask: ‘Can you still make ends meet, can you still buy your groceries?’ He doesn’t have that problem, but for now, he’s in trouble.”

What next for Ten Hag?

Ten Hag might have been sacked by United, but the former Ajax boss is already being linked with other major posts around Europe.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly eyeing him up as a replacement for the under-pressure Nuri Sahin while he will inevitably be associated with other jobs as managers are sacked or resign throughout the season.

Meanwhile, the post-Ten Hag era at Manchester United started in the most emphatic way possible.

Interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who Ten Hag took to the club in the summer, oversaw a 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City in which Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both hit doubles while Alejandro Garnacho was also on target.
