And United chiefs decided to axe him after a disastrous start to the season which sees the club languishing in 14th position in the Premier League.

They have also failed to win all three of their Europa League matches, and are winless in 10 of their 14 matches in all competitions.

According to the Daily Star, though, Ten Hag believes he was let down by his senior players.

He singles out Rashford, Casemiro and Antony for particular blame.

The former duo were big money signings, with United splashing out over €170 million in total on the pair in Ten Hag’s first summer in 2022.

Antony was a disaster throughout Ten Hag’s reign, while Casemiro’s form plummeted after a promising first campaign.

As for Rashford, after a superb first season under Ten Hag, his form also collapsed and he endured a very difficult relationship with his manager on and off the pitch.

Ten Hag feels that the trio more than anyone else contributed to the poor results that led to his sacking.

Ten Hag had been expected to be sacked this summer after a generally miserable 2023-24 campaign in which - despite winning the FA Cup - Man Utd finished eighth in the Premier League and were dumped out of Europe at the Champions League group stage.

United held an internal review on Ten Hag’s future and even spoke to a number of potential managerial replacements, but in a shock development decided that the Dutchman would be staying at Old Trafford.

That decision only delayed the inevitable as Ten Hag has now finally been sacked just two months into the new season.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is expected to be announced as his replacement in the coming hours or days.
