The former Spain international joined Fiorentina on a Bosman deal in August, having spent the previous 13 months as a free agent following his Manchester United departure.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a 12 year spell at Old Trafford, but he left in fairly unceremonious fashion, with a large proportion of the club’s fanbase turning against De Gea during his final few seasons in Manchester.

Since arriving at Fiorentina, De Gea has impressed and his short time at the club so far peaked with his performance versus Milan.

The ex-Man Utd superstar, who was widely considered to be the world’s best goalkeeper for several years, saved two penalties on the night as Fiorentina earned a point against Paulo Fonseca’s side.

De Gea denied Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham with outstandings saves either side of half-time. Both players opted to shoot across their body, with De Gea diving brilliantly to his left to save Hernandez’s spot kick and to his right for Abraham’s.

Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan also saved a penalty during the match, with Moise Kean’s effort pushed away by the France international in the 22nd minute.

However, Fiorentina eventually ran out 2-1 winners, with Milan loanee Yacine Adli and fellow summer signing Albert Gudmundsson on the scoresheet for La Viola.

What has been said?

Man Utd fans were quick to praise De Gea after his double penalty save, with several Red Devils fans eager to argue that the decision to bring in Andre Onana as the Spaniard’s replacement was a poor one.
