Manchester United are in a period of uncertainty and there is an idea that Ineos will make an ‘unexpected call’ regarding the managerial situation, FootballTransfers has been told.

Sources inform us that fans should 'expect the unexpected' over the coming weeks. Furthermore, insiders tell us that there is a quietness surrounding Old Trafford that has not occurred since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

United chiefs were not prepared for such a woeful start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag, especially as €214.5 million was forked out on new additions.

As previously revealed, current assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was lined up to take over from Ten Hag once he had familiarised himself with the job if his compatriot did not achieve his targets by the end of the season. This is why the former United striker got a contract until at least 2026, the same length as Ten Hag.

We understand that it was Ineos who wanted Van Nistelrooy and it wasn't someone Ten Hag asked for. Even still, there is confusion between certain members of the United, who have contrasting views on appointing Van Nistelrooy this early.

Ten Hag’s job in the balance

Even if United beat Aston Villa on Saturday, there will be conversations taking place over Ten Hag's future during the international break.

Ineos carried out an extensive review of the season after the club finished eighth in the Premier League table. But United’s FA Cup win over Manchester City was enough for them to allow Ten Hag to keep his job and even sign a fresh deal until June 2026, a year more than his previous deal.

With two major trophies under his belt in two seasons, things should be plain sailing for the Dutchman, but the lack of an identity, along with some horrendous results this season, has meant Ineos are now reconsidering their options and could give Ten Hag the boot past this weekend.
