Manchester United could reportedly re-appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following their decision to sack Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils relieved Ten Hag of his duties on 28 October following a woeful start to the new season, in which Man Utd only picked up four wins in 14 games across all competitions.

Ten Hag’s contract was extended in July, following the club’s triumph in the FA Cup final, but INEOS have pulled the trigger amid their struggles so far this campaign.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in interim charge in the immediate aftermath of Ten Hag’s dismissal, although Man Utd are now searching for possible replacement options.

Graham Potter, Xavi, Edin Terzic, Thomas Frank, Gareth Southgate, Ruben Amorim and even Jose Mourinho have been touted as potential targets for Man Utd, but the club may be forced to hire a free agent as Ten Hag’s replacement.

The club owe Ten Hag just over €20 million in compensation and this means they may be unable to buy a manager of their contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.

As a result, Man Utd are scouring the free agent market and are considering a move for Solskjaer, who has been out of work since being sacked by the Red Devils in November 2021.

Who will be Man Utd’s next manager?

Terzic, Xavi and Southgate are also currently free agents, as is Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s preferred target Zinedine Zidane. However, a move for the Real Madrid legend is unlikely given his lack of English.

Hiring Van Nistelrooy on a permanent basis is also an option for Man Utd, although the club legend may need to turn results around during his interim period in order to land the job on a full-time contract.

Man Utd are currently 14th in the Premier League table, 12 points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Manchester City.
