EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal to offer Partey ‘Jorginho-style’ contract extension
Arsenal are planning to offer midfielder Thomas Partey a new contract at the club.
The Gunners have slated a meeting for January in which Partey, alongside manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu Gasper, is set to make a pivotal decision about his future with the club.
At 31, the Ghana star had appeared to be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium last summer when Mikel Merino was signed from Real Sociedad.
An injury to the Spain midfielder, meanwhile, opened to door for Partey to once again make himself a vital component of Arsenal’s setup.
He now finds himself at a crossroads as he considers his role and future prospects at the North London club while several clubs in LaLiga eye the prospect of a move.
1+1 deal for Partey
Partey has been an integral figure for Arsenal, particularly in the early stages of the season.
His performance against Liverpool, in particular, was stellar. Redeployed at right-back, Partey excelled against Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, winning 13 duels and securing four tackles—the highest of any player on the pitch. His dominance with 82 touches, more than any other Arsenal player, underscored his influence and adaptability on the field.
Following this remarkable display, Arsenal are considering a contract offer similar to that given to Jorginho earlier this year - a one-year extension with an option for an additional year.
The terms reflect a carefully considered approach by the club, which wants to retain Partey’s experience while managing the squad's balance and depth.
Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for €50 million, Partey has shown flashes of brilliance that have occasionally placed him among Europe’s top midfielders.
However, his tenure at the Emirates has also been marred by recurring injuries, raising questions about his long-term viability in Arsenal’s ambitious lineup.
Partey’s current contract runs through June 2025, leaving Arsenal facing something of a rush to decide the player’s future.
However, Partey’s continuation at Arsenal hinges on two main factors: his ability to maintain fitness and his willingness to adapt to a role with potentially limited game time as the team contends for Premier League and European titles.
With the January meeting just weeks away, the ball is now in Partey’s court. Whether he chooses to embrace a new chapter at Arsenal under modified terms or explore opportunities elsewhere, his decision will be a significant development in the Gunners’ pursuit of silverware.
