The likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have been given a boost in the race to sign Jonathan David on a free transfer next summer.

David is in the final year of his contract at Lille and is expected to be one of the most in-demand players over the coming months, having netted seven times in 11 Ligue 1 games this season as well as four goals in as many matches in the Champions League.

The availability of a consistent 24-year-old goalscorer on a free transfer has led to interest from many Premier League sides but they all would have been disappointed by David’s suggestion this week that he was holding out for a move to Barcelona, having supported them as a youngster.

However, Catalan outlet El Nacional have claimed that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has ‘casted doubt’ on whether David is the answer for the club.

Barca’s interest in David is described as having previously been a ‘done deal’ due to director Deco believing the Canadian’s availability as a ‘unique opportunity’, particularly due to his cost.

But Flick is said to have ‘stopped the operation abruptly’ as he is not convinced David is at the level to lead Barca’s frontline, especially as he is inexperienced in major competitions.

Barca hesitation could allow rivals to win David race

David is understood to still be pushing for a move to Barcelona, having described his ‘dream’ to play there, while the La Liga giants will continue to debate over the striker’s signing.

While Flick appreciates David’s quality, the German boss believes the Lille star may not be the right player for the team’s timeline, having reinforced his belief In Barca’s youth prospects.

Barca are looking for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski but Flick is seeking a more ‘complete’ striker with experience at the highest level, with the Catalans having been linked to Erling Haaland as well.

The hesitation by Barca over David could open the door for United and Chelsea, who have both held a long-term interest in the player and are likely to try for his signature when he is able to freely negotiate with clubs in January.
