OFFICIAL: Frank Lampard appointed as new Coventry City head coach

Frank Lampard has officially been unveiled as the new Coventry City manager.

The Chelsea legend has returned to football management a year and a half after his ill-fated caretaker spell at Stamford Bridge toward the end of the 2022/23 season.

Lampard failed to affect an upturn in results or performances during his second stint at Chelsea and it would prove to be his last job in the dugout for some time. Previously, the 46-year-old had also had a permanent stint with the Blues, an encouraging first coaching job at Derby County and a less successful spell at Everton.

However, Championship side Coventry City have announced the former England midfielder as their new manager, replacing club legend Mark Robins after a lengthy coaching search.

Upon news of Lampard's appointment, Coventry City Owner and Executive Chairman Doug King said: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as Head Coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a Club are striving to reach."

Coventry appoint Lampard

Robins was sacked by Coventry in early November after a whopping seven years in charge in which he led the Sky Blues from League Two all the way to the Championship promotion final and an FA Cup semi-final.

His dismissal was hugely surprising to say the least, albeit the club did get off to a slow start to the season. King justified the decision by insisting that he had spent a lot of money on a squad capable of a top-six finish and wouldn't stand for a relegation battle.

Lampard faces a tough challenge to live up to the expectations of King but should he succeed, he could resurrect his faltering coaching career in the process.

Coventry are currently 17th in the Championship and have not won a league game since November 2. The Sky Blues were beaten 2-0 by Burnley on Tuesday evening after successive 2-2 draws with Sheffield United and Sunderland, respectively.
