He passed with flying colours thanks to a huge 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League, and Man Utd supporters believe their new head coach could be the man to bring widespread success back to Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola has now lost three consecutive games across all competitions, with Amorim’s side turning things around with an immense second-half performance.

Man Utd and Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres notched a hat-trick on the night to further boost his credentials as one of Europe’s best forwards, and Amorim could well target a reunion at Old Trafford in 2025 amid Joshua Zirkzee’s current woes.

The next time Amorim will face Guardiola will be in the Manchester Derby in December and Man Utd fans are already excited by the prospect of the 39-year-old turning their fortunes around over the coming weeks.

Ahead of Sporting’s resounding win over Man City, Amorim joked: “If the result is negative, expectations will lower. If we win, they'll think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived!”

As a result, fans are now set to expect Amorim to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s immense achievements at Old Trafford when he officially joins the club on 11 November.

While Man Utd are currently 13th in the English top flight table, having suffered their worst ever start to a Premier League season, they are only six points behind Chelsea in fourth-place, meaning European qualification remains on the cards if Amorim is able to instigate an immediate improvement.

Regardless, Man Utd fans have sung his praises following Sporting’s victory on Tuesday night.
