Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United's 'top priority' for 2025 is to sign a left-back.

Ruben Amorim got an initial idea of the capabilities of his squad in his debut match on the sidelines against Ipswich Town. The game finished in a disappointing 1-1 draw for the Red Devils and several players had to be moved around to fit the 39-year-old's 3-4-3 system.

Noussair Mazraoui, for example, started the game as a makeshift centre-back while Diogo Dalot played at left wing-back despite Tyrell Malacia returning to a matchday squad for the first time in over a year.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Amorim has repeatedly made it clear to the club, including after the Ipswich game, that they ought to sign a new left wing-back in 2025.

The Italian states that a transfer will obviously depend on 'opportunities, price and several factors' but does not rule out a January move, so a left-sided defender could be the first signing of the Amorim era at Man Utd.

Man Utd's left wing-back targets

As far as specific targets are concerned, Romano reiterates that Milos Kerkez and Alphonso Davies are two of the options under consideration but that there are also several more players on the club's shortlist.

Man Utd are long-time admirers of Bournemouth youngster Kerkez but there are concerns over his price, while Davies is viewed as a 'dream target,' though there is an acceptance that Real Madrid are probably the favourites to sign him.

On Monday, Sky Germany also mentioned those two as options for Man Utd and added AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez to that list. The Frenchman has no shortage of admirers around Europe's elite and was in 'advanced talks' with Bayern Munich in the summer.

However, because Davies was not sold, the move for Hernandez fell through. He remains Bayern's top option to replace the Canadian, but Man Utd are also keeping tabs on him.
