Ruben Amorim believes that the future of Marcus Rashford could lie at centre-forward, according to a report.

The new Man Utd head coach will finally lead his first training session next Monday after work permit issues caused a week-long delay. Despite having a completely different squad at his disposal now, Amorim is not planning to deviate from his favoured 3-4-3 formation.

The 39-year-old admitted as much after his final game at Sporting CP. “I know how I am going to play in the beginning because you have to start with a structure that you know,” he said.

“Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack, I will discover that in the next few weeks. We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well. You can take whatever you want from that.”

Man Utd's squad has not been built with a back-three system in mind, which has given rise to rampant speculation about which players will and won't fit Amorim's system.

Rashford as a No.9?

A lot of the talk has centred on Marcus Rashford, a player who likes to use width to his advantage before cutting inside from the left, although he did feature on the right towards the end of Erik ten Hag's time in charge.

However, Amorim prefers the nominal wide forwards in his system to operate more centrally, which has given rise to doubts over Rashford's suitability. Indeed, in the long term, the coach has been tipped to axe the 27-year-old altogether.

In the short term, though, Amorim could experiment with Rashford at striker, which is not his best role but also not one entirely unfamiliar to him. GIVEMESPORT claims that the 39-year-old will pick Rashford as his 'preferred number nine' in a bid to 'fit him into the side.'

It is asserted that Amorim will 'attack the channels and space behind defenders in transition' and views the England international as more suitable for the role than Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund.
