The Dutchman's return to his former stomping ground was intense but, ultimately, brief. Man Utd have announced that club legend Van Nistelrooy will not be retained by Ruben Amorim as an assistant coach.

The Portuguese, who arrived in Manchester on Monday to become the Red Devils' new permanent head coach, informed Van Nistelrooy that he would not be part of his coaching staff.

Amorim was spotted earlier on Monday boarding a plane to England along with five of his Sporting CP assistants, which raised questions over the interim boss' future.

Now, Man Utd have confirmed that Van Nistelrooy has left the club again, having only joined in the summer.

Van Nistelrooy's brief Man Utd return

A club legend as a player, Van Nistelrooy re-joined Man Utd as assistant to Erik ten Hag in the summer. The Dutchman was a popular figure in the dressing room and the heir-apparent to Ten Hag in the event of a sacking.

When the latter materialised on October 28, Van Nistelrooy was given the reins on an interim basis until the arrival of Amorim, announced on November 1. He has now left the club having managed to instil enthusiasm and confidence back into the side.

Under Van Nistelrooy's leadership, Man Utd won three out of four games, comfortably beating Leicester (twice), PAOK and drawing 1-1 with Chelsea.

Van Nistelrooy recently expressed his desire to become a manager again, preferably at Man Utd, but acknowledged that the final decision on his future would ultimately have to be made by the club and Amorim.

The latter has now decided to axe the club legend. Ten Hag's other former staff members Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also been let go by Man Utd.
